I have seen so many amazing worlds and done so many amazing things because of this CPU. It is finally time to retire my old friend. Over to Intel I go, but I will never forget this absolute IRONMAN of a chip. From hot 3rd floor apartments, to humid summers in our new rental house, this beast has kept me playing literally without fail. Not a crash, not a bug, nothing caused by the CPU itself.
Even when OC'ing. It was always my memory or GPU causing issues.
It's running solid at 2.9 as I write this, and my new parts ship in the mail. Hats off to AMD for this one, minus the pesky little mishap with TLC timing, I don't think I'll ever have another piece of hardware as reliably awesome as this one. Thank you guys for the years of fun. Pros:Cranks through multiple processes like a minature mainframe. Still scores 7+ in Windows 7 even though it's becoming a little dated.
I run two VMware guests OSs plus play BF2 with no stuttering or slowdown. Even tried it one time with a DivX encoding running also and still no slowdown.Cons:Not an AM3 so it will never get to play with DDR3 memory which would be neat to see.
Does generate a bit of heat.Overall Review:Mine is coupled with a Koolance EXOS2 so getting the heat out isn't a problem; I'd be a little careful running this (especially with a high-end graphics card) on air unless you have a really good case with excellent flow. Also, if your motherboard doesn't sport 8 phase VRMs or better, you'll need to cool those down somehow-they get brutally punished with core voltages spiking up and down and heat build-up. Pros:Low cost, fast speed, overclockable.Cons:Runs HOT! AMD still uses vertical standing pins for chip install. Easy to bend if you aren't paying attention.Overall Review:Got this in a bundle deal with the Biostar motherboard, and 4 G of ram for $220.
Hard to go wrong at that price!But I would definately make sure you have a WELL vented case (at least 2 120mm case fans), and get a GOOD 120mm CPU cooler. I used a 120mm Zalman cooler and I idle at 28-30 °C and hit 32-36 °C under load. I would not run this chip with a stock cooler.
